Helpful Tip from the Garden Geeks: What is Winter Protection?
Gardeners everywhere often grow plants which are not able to survive the winter in their climate, without help. These plants are not hardy for their growing zone. In some cases, the help plants need is to be completely dug up and stored in a frost free place, like a green house, cellar, basement or cold frame. Often, a plant can be protected by just placing a mulch of insulating material on the soil over the roots. Sometimes, the tops have to be covered to protect them from cold, drying winds and winter sunshine that can cause a burn to the leaves or needles.
