Helpful Tip from the Garden Geeks: Can you correct infested or diseased soil?
Yes, you can. Most pests and diseases in the soil (but not all) can be controlled by crop rotations, and keep susceptible plants from the area for 4 or 5 years. We don't recommend commercial fumigants because they are very localized and only work temporarily, but more importantly, they can destroy beneficial plants and animals.
If you are looking for a quick fix for a small area, you can attempt sanitizing the soil with heat by covering the area with black plastic and leaving it fixed in place. Your goal is to allow the sun to bake the soil, but for this to happen, the soil must reach 200ºF for at least 30 minutes. This should kill most of the harmful organisms, but can also kill the good as well.
