Helpful Tip from the Garden Geeks: Do the presence of earthworms indicate good soil conditions?
It sure does! Earthworms are fairly sensitive to soil conditions. They do their best in well drained soils with a lot of organic matter. This organic matter is their food source. They are susceptible to drought, cold, wet, and extremes of pH.
They improve the soil by mixing surface organic matter with underlying soil, improving aeration, water movement, and breaking down organic matter as they consume it.
If you see a lot of earthworms in your soil, your soil is in pretty good shape.
