Helpful Tip from the Garden Geeks:  Special care for clipping roses. Climbing and rambling roses need different treatment. Both bloom on last year's wood, but ramblers usually bloom only once a season, whereas climbers may bloom throughout. Remove dead or damaged branches on both in early spring. After the first bloom, prune old, unproductive wood and give the plants shape. Avoid hard pruning climbing roses since they don't grow as fast as their rambling relatives. Rambling roses can withstand tougher treatment. You can prune old canes down to the ground after the plant blooms, but have a lighter touch with new growth.
