Helpful Tip from the Garden Geeks: Here are a few things you can do to keep flea beetles (and their kin like toothed, striped, sweet potato, cabbage, eggplant and desert beetles) from becoming more then a minor problem. Get rid of weeds around the edge of your garden. Weeds attract flea beetles, and they go from there to your veggies. Clean up dead plant debris where they spend the winter. Wood ashes and mints, like peppermint, spearmint, and pennyroyal, are good flea beetle deterrents. Wood ash is especially effective around potatoes.
