Helpful tip from The Garden Geeks: If you have a garden bed that you don't plan on planting in for a few weeks, replenish the soil with bird seed. A cover crop, like oats or rye grass, can keep your soil in tip top shape until you are ready to plant again. The cheapest source for seed is birdseed or deer plot mix. Sprinkle the seeds thickly in a recently plowed or cleared plot, and let them grow for a few weeks. Just before the flowers mature, plow them under or cut them down.
