Helpful tip from The Garden Geeks: If you like the efficiency of black plastic mulch, but you don't like paying the price, or the way it looks when it starts peeking out under your mulch, then make your own sheet mulch. Buy a roll of inexpensive brown paper and cut it into long strips. Coat the paper with soybean oil and hang it to dry. Arrange it around you plants as you would the black plastic mulch. This mulch will not only keep weeds at bay, but it will cost less and slowly decompose.
