Helpful tip from The Garden Geeks: Convert that sloping part of your yard, the one you hate to mow, into a rock garden. Stagger groupings of partially buried large and medium rocks so water stops rushing down the hill in a straight line. Fill in the gaps with smaller rocks and plants that are right for your zone. Our favorite plants for rock gardens? Lavender, thyme, Basket of gold, Arabis procurrens, primrose, tulips, moss pink, cottage pink, Sedum kamtschaticum, Dragon's Blood Stonecrop, and my favorite spring bloomer, creeping phlox.
