Helpful tip from The Garden Geeks: The secret to a long lasting and productive asparagus patch is patience and a little work. First dig a trench about 12" wide and 12" deep. Put compost at the bottom and plant the pre-soaked asparagus crowns about 18" apart. Then cover them with compost and water them well. As the spears grow, shovel dirt into the hole until it's full, then cover with compost and mulch. Fertilize a couple of times during the summer and remove weeds as they come up. Wait to years before harvesting, then pick them as needed.
