Helpful tip from The Garden Geeks: Here's a little pruning hint. When pruning shrubs or woody plants and trying to clear away dead branches, never cut into the living wood. Cutting just above the line into the deadwood saves the plant energy because it doesn't have to heal the fresh cut. The only exception is if you can't see a clear line between damaged and healthy wood. If this is the case prune into the good wood to help contain the active disease before it spreads farther.
