Notes for Identification: Origin: semi-tropical climates of central mexico, tehuacn-cuicatln, oaxaca and pueblo regions hardiness zones: sunset 10, 12-24 usda 8 (sometimes injured) - 11 landscape use: small desert garden spaces, rock gardens, and containers as an accent or specimen plant form & character: an elegant, small, but very rigid and stiff, herbaceous perennial, that , elegant, classy growth habit: slow to 20" in height, clumping and spreading slowly by rhizomes over time to form small colonies of clones, several feet in diameter. Foliage/texture: clearly glaucous succulent stiff leaves about 1" wide to 8-10" long taper to a sharp and dangerous spine tip, medium coarse texture flowers & fruits: terminal flower stalk producing reddish green flowers or bulbils to 6' in height, not the most ornamental of agave flowers seasonal color: none the leaves are linear and about 1" wide by a foot or so in length. The color is gray-blue. Temperature: injured below 25of or above 115of. Light: light filtered shade from western sun is best soil: any soil type, but thrives best if soils are well-drained or kept on the dry side watering: only limited supplemental irrigation during summer months is needed to keep plants looking healthy. Pruning: none required propagation: division of basal offshoots and rooting of bulbils easiest, seed disease and pests: none additional comments: great accent plant for small desert garden spaces. 'acantha' means a sharp spiny part or structure. The leaf tips of this impressive small agave are 'macro' indeed - very sharp and dangerous!
