Probiotics are the wave of the future. Probiotics are defined as “Live microorganisms which when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit on the host.”

We already use many types of probiotics designed for human health, i.e. yogurt. It has been shown that eating foods containing certain types of “yeast and bacilli can be very beneficial in the control of various types of lactose intolerance, and new research indicates these microorganisms can assist in the dietary controls of high cholesterol, inflammatory bowel disease, and improve the body’s immune system to help fight infections. That being said, there are SBO’s (Soil based probiotics) currently available to enhance and improve the quality of your soil.

“According to medical research scientist Dr. William C.Bryce, M.D., Ph.D., Among other functions SBO's produce and release powerful enzymes that sterilize the soil of putrefactive organisms, and thereby help prepare the soil to support new plant growth. Without SBO's, lush plant growth could not take place because the soil would be too contaminated with yeasts, molds, fungi, candida and other harmful organisms that are antagonistic to plant growth and reproduction.

The enzymes produced by the SBO's solve this problem by helping kill off huge amounts of the harmful elements in the soil. Dr. Bryce points out that in addition to the above function, SBO's also produce and release nutrients and growth hormones which, when absorbed through the roots of plants, help stimulate the reproductive cycle in the plants. For example, the growth hormones produced by SBO's are biologically activated to stimulate seed maturation. Simultaneously, these hormones also accelerate further numeric growth of the SBO colonies themselves.”

There are multiple types of these products available on the market today. And you can even make your own. For the last two years we have been using EM-1 (Effective Microorganisms) on our garden, yard, trees, compost piles and house plants. Having gardened organically for over 20 years, we have good soil, but this is rather like asking for “super size it!” We have seen a marked increase in vegetable production as well as well as other plants that seem to much healthier and stronger.

The EM-1 mother culture consists of 13-15 microorganisms normally found in the soil. This can be “activated” using a formula consisting of the mother culture, organic black strap molasses, and water. The ingredients are mixed together and placed in a container with a sealable lid. This is allowed to “work” for about 7-10 days. At which time the top will be covered with white fungal growth and have a “sharp” smell, it reminds me of apple cider vinegar. The ph is measured at 3 for the finished product. The manufacture recommends using 1 teaspoon per gallon of water once a week during the growing season. They expect you to get optimum results in about 3 years, depending on the quality of your soil. This is a truly organic product as it is totally non toxic to humans, pets, wildlife etc. The activated product AEM-1 can also be use on your compost bin to help accelerate the breakdown of the pile. You can also use it to make Bokashi (garbage juice), you need a sealable 5 gallon sterile bucket, add all your vegetable leavings to the bucket consisting of anything you would normally put in your compost pile, plus with bokashi you can also use meat and dairy products. The microorganisms literally “pickle” those items so drawing varmints become a non issue. Weight the material down, and proceed to add additional layers until the bucket is almost full. In the mean time, you can siphon off the ”juice” to use in your garden, again you use 1 teaspoon per gallon of water. There are various demonstration of making your own Bokashi buckets and bokashi bran on youtube.com.However Activated EM-1 works just as well as the bran and frankly saves you a step.

As you can see this is use for a wide variety of environmental issues. The scientific research and data is extremely impressive.
