To start seedlings in the right direction, fresh potting mix and a clean container are the way to go. Doing this is the best way to be certain that you are not incubating pests and diseases while you are working diligently to start your seedlings.

To clean your container, always scrub it thoroughly with a brush and hot soapy water.  Make sure that all of the old soil or plant debris has been washed away.  Next, soak the container in a mild bleach solution of 1 part bleach to 10 parts water.  If you are using a wooden container, or any porous ones, allow it to soak for about 30 minutes. If you are using a no porous container such as plastic or glass, a 10 minute soak is fine.

Rinse the container  well in clear water before using, and you are ready to fill your container with fresh, sterile potting mix.
